Le titre fait référence à la ville de Palo Alto en Californie, la plus grande ville de la prospère Sillicon Valley. De nombreuses et prestigieuses entreprises y ont leur siège, notamment beaucoup dont le domaine est la télécommunication. À l’entrée de la ville, un panneau accueille les gens par : ’Welcome to Palo Alto, A city of the future’ (’bienvenue à Palo Alto, une ville du future’).

La chanson existe encore à l’état embryonnaire, comme en témoigne cet enregistrement (que l’on connait incomplet) d’une prestation du groupe à une 2meter session, en Hollande :

Le 28 mars 1996, Radiohead avait donné un concert à Palo Alto, et s’y promena un peu, observant les nombreuses tours ultra moderne et l’attitude des gens qui y résident. Les paroles de la chanson, écrites en novembre 1997, semblent en parler.

La chanson avait été prévue pour figurer sur l’album OK Computer, sous le titre de OK Computer justement… au dernier moment elle a été retirée de la tracklist… mais bon, ça reste à vérifier, rien d’officiel là dedans !

Sur la vidéo Meeting People is easy, la chanson figure en entier, avec un support visuel qui fait étonnamment penser à un clip….
