Selon Ed, c’est une après-midi de 2004 que le groupe, enfin surtout Jonny, Thom et Colin, a commencé le travail de loops pour cette chanson, sur une machine à 24 pistes.

Ed: “That was done in 2004, and Jonny, Thom, and Colin spent an afternoon… it was on a 24-track tape machine. Jonny did it on Bodysong. You just turn the 24-track into one big tape loop. And you can have… by the time it goes around, you can be any length, but I think the loops are like a second and a half. And you just record a fragment for a second and a half. And then the idea is you have them all on faders and you just go up and down and you ???. So you just mix it on faders and…”

Michael: “And that was done before you started rehearsing in 2005?”

Ed: “Yeah. But it wasn’t finished, it was just some of the backing tracks. And we added extra guitar. The bass was changed. The drums were added, Phil overdid drums. Then there were vocal lines and stuff. Backing vocals and stuff, I did after. The general core of the track was done in 2004.”

Quelques pistes pour la chanson nous étaient déjà données en 2005 et avec la sortie du calendrier 2006 du groupe, au détour de deux illustrations :

Sur le blog de radiohead.com, le groupe poste une photo d’un tableau, avec des titres de chansons sur lesquelles ils semblent travailler à cette époque (ils étaient en studio du 19 au 30 septembre 2005).

Bangers and mash fait partie de la liste.

 

Le groupe ayant déjà la structure de base de la chanson, restait à y ajouter des effets, de la guitare, de la basse, de la batterie, de la mélodie…

Une nouvelle photo du tableaux des chansons répétées par le groupe avant de partir en live est postée. Cette fois-ci, bangers and mash n’y figure plus. Peut-être le groupe n’a t-il plus besoin de répéter la chanson, où lui a-t-il attribué un autre titre ?

Les gens qui ont commandé l’édition spéciale (dite « discbox ») du nouvel album la reçoive par la poste (deux mois après la sortie). Il s’agit d’un coffret spécial, où l’on trouve un CD2 qui n’avait pas été proposé avant, avec quelques chansons supplémentaires, dont bangers+mash :

Le groupe organise un concours afin de sensibiliser ses fans à réduire l’empreinte carbone sur la tournée.

Tous les participants reçoivent un lien pour télécharger une version « soundboard » de ’Bangers And Mash’ jouée à Dublin le 6 juin 2008.
