Des images postées sur le site radiohead.com laissent penser que le groupe a déjà les paroles en tête :

Sur le Dead Air Space (le blog du groupe sur radiohead.com), le groupe laisse filtrer la photo d’un tableau où sont notés des titres de chansons qu’ils ont répété en studio (en vue du nouvel album) du 19 au 30 septembre.

En juillet 2008, Michael, le webmaster du site citizeninsane va faire parler Ed à propos de l’enregistrement :

Même s’il ne sera diffusé que plus tard, le premier épisode de « from the basement », par Nigel Godrich est enregistré. Thom y interprète en solo « Down is The New Up ». Cette première version incluait dans les paroles cette ligne « what is up buttercup », qu’on ne retrouvera plus ensuite. Par contre, le « won’t you be my girl » n’est pas encore dans ses paroles. Le final sera également modifié par la suite pour la version jouée par le groupe en entier, puisque Thom ne répétera plus à la fin deux fois « is the new up ». A noter aussi que la chanson se terminait alors par « crawled off and left us/you bastards. »

Nigel Godrich poste quelques rushs en vrac que le Dead Air Space, morceaux de quelques secondes mélangeant un tas de séquences de mix. On peut y repérer trois segments de ’Down Is The New Up”.

Les fans qui l’avaient pré-commandé sur radiohead.com, seul lieu de vente, reçoivent l’édition spéciale d’« In Rainbows », composée du CD, du vinyle de l’album, mais aussi de quelques artworks et d’un CD bonus de 8 chansons, où l’on peut entendre (en 2^e position) la version studio de Down Is The New Up :

Pourquoi Down Is The News Up, que le public aime bien, est-elle une face-B et non sur l’album ?
