Dans une interview pour The Comment Factory en novembre 2008, Thom Yorke explique à quel point la pensée de Noam Chomsky l’influence depuis longtemps :
[quote ]“I had a really good friend of mine at university who went into
politics behind the scenes,” says Yorke. “I used to go out with him all
the time talking about it, but by the time I left college I was like,
Fucking forget it. And the thing that got me back into it was Noam
Chomsky…”

Q : Really ?

“Well I think it was a combination of what was happening to us at the
time – we’d starting touring in America a lot, signed to this big
corporate label, and we’d had all this success and people talking to us
in a very peculiar way, spending a lot of time at the exposed end of the
media. It was almost being at the saturated side of it – you go into
the gym at the hotel and there you’d be on the MTV, it was just
everywhere. And it was all a bit like, What is this, what is going on
here ? We’ve suddenly become part of this cultural emblem that’s being
used all over the world, you know, along with Nirvana and all that.

“And in the midst of that going home and Rachel had recorded this
Chomsky thing, Manufacturing Consent, and I watched it when I got home.
So I started reading Chomsky and started getting back into it really.”[/quote]
Depuis la guerre du Vietnam, ce penseur radical dénonce l’organisation du monde au profit des oligarchies financières. Dans ses libres conversations, paradoxales et tranchantes, Noam Chomsky décortique les mécanismes de la société de marché, l’économie invisible, la fabrication du consentement, les centres de pouvoir…

Également professeur de linguistique, Noam Chomsky a marqué par ses pensées à contre courant toute une génération, et les membres de Radiohead, en particulier Thom, semble être ses inconditionnels. Les ouvrages du ’maître’ sont nombreux, tant dans le domaine linguistique que social, économique et politique.

La personnalité de Noam est parfois ambiguë, et sa manière de procéder également. En France par exemple, il est banni car beaucoup de personnes lui ont reproché d’avoir écrit la préface d’un ouvrage antisémite écrit par Faurisson… alors qu’il est juif… Robert Faurisson soutenait que les chambres à gaz ne pouvaient exister.

Dans cette préface, Noam expliquait pourtant qu’il n’avait lu ni le livre, ni aucun des travaux antérieurs de Faurisson, mais n’est ce pas que du double-langage ?

Thom s’inspire depuis longtemps des pensées de Noam.

La chanson Electioneering serait directement inspirée des critiques des média Chomski. En 1997, dans une interview de John Sakomoto pour Jam ! Showbiz Thom Yorke expliquait :
[quote ]”Like a lot of songs I write, it came from two places at once. I had
this phase I went through on an American tour where we just seemed to be
shaking hands all the time, and I was getting a bit sick of it and
upset by it. So I came up with this running joke with myself, where I
used to shake people’s hands and say, ’I trust I can rely on your vote.’
They’d go hahaha and look at me like I was a nutcase. But the phrase
sort of carried on. It was like a mantra. “As well as that, I had been
reading a lot of Chomsky, and I had that feeling when you read Chomsky
that you want to get out and do something and realize, in fact, that
you’re impotent.«[/quote]
En Juin 1998, alors qu’il participait au Tibetan Freedom Concert, à la question,
