Thom a parfois introduit la chanson lors des concerts en disant : « This is a rock song », il n’y a pas de doutes là dessus !

De l’aveu même de Thom Yorke, la chanson est très ancienne, puisque écrite avant même la sortie de Pablo Honey :

L’écriture des paroles part, comme beaucoup des premières chansons du groupe, du sentiment de solitude qu’ils ont tous ressenti dès 1992 :

Une phrase fera beaucoup jaser, le “‘I wish it was the sixties, I wish we could be happy'”.

Le groupe fait une session acoustique sur Signal Radio, et joue “The Bendz” (eh oui, ils avaient choisi jusque là ce titre avec une petite facétie, qui sera retirée ensuite). Thom explique que le groupe ne l’a pas enregistrée pour la mettre sur Pablo Honey.

 

La chanson est alors jouée régulièrement lors de la tournée pour la promotion de Pablo Honey en 1993, comme ici le 23 février 1993 pour une black session sur France Inter :

En studio, le groupe essaye d’enregistrer une version démo de la chanson. De cette studio, seule la version de “High & Dry” conviendra assez pour être publiée, le reste (à savoir donc “The Bends”, mais aussi “Nice Dream”, “Pop Is Dead” and “Banana Co.”) est publiée sur une compilation avec le statut de “démo” : Radiotick.

Au début de la version album de la chanson, on entend un enregistrement en juillet 1993 fait par Thom, alors qu’il est à l’hôtel, d’une groupe de majorette à Phoenix (U.S.) que son moniteur encourage à travers un micro en disant « give it up » (continuez !).

Le groupe est entré en studio pour enregistrer un tas de nouvelles chansons. Les sessions sont productives.

Selon Phil, l’enregistrement de The Bends s’est fait en une seule piste… parce qu’il était personnellement pressé d’en finir.

Ed est enfin soulagé d’avoir réussi à enregistrer une chanson entendue si souvent en live auparavant, et surtout d’avoir pu rendre sur enregistrement le son de la guitare de jonny.

Vers août, Thom a classé sur une K7 démo les pistes qu’il pense réserver pour l’album (en face A), et celles qu’il envisage comme des faces-B… On remarquera qu’il hésite encore pour le titre : The Benz / The Bends ?

Paradoxalement, la chanson n’est jamais sortie en single, et aucun clip n’en a été fait… pourtant, pour le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est vraiment un énorme tube du groupe, jamais démodé, toujours réclamé et joué !
